Hmm, where do I begin? Well, like any beginning it's good to lay down terms and definitions so let's start with finding out what does epic mean. In strict dictionary terms, epic means, a long poem or similar work of art celebrating heroic feats or adventures. We might think of epic novels like Tolkien's Lord of the Ring trilogy or the the epic adventures of the Skywalker family in the Star Wars saga. It speaks of heroic deeds and grand adventures or a quest usually involving danger, love, always self discovery, etc. The classic Heroes Journey.

We think of something being epic if it's sweeping and almost all consuming. At one time, the term was used in colloquial terms much like saying, Wow! the kids would say, Epic!

All this has informed my version of EPIC - an acronym, as you might have guessed.

EPIC

So, you may have noticed that I have begun to spell EPIC in all caps and here is why: it naturally came to me one day as I was pondering my own grand adventure...

Extraordinary

Passionate

Inspired

Creative

We - yes, you and me, we are Extraordinary, Passionate, Inspired, Creative

To me an EPIC life is one that includes exploring traditional foods, designing a tiny home or she shed, growing a lot of my own veg, always poking the box of my beliefs until I realize that that is just what they are - beliefs. I want to be the best me I can be.

For you it will be different. I mean I sure hope so! What if we all wanted the same things, believed the same things, loved the same things... How boring! Like walking into a buffet and only seeing a carved roast. Like coming to a garden and only seeing red roses. Even if you love roast beef or red roses, you'd have to admit there are other things to make life EPIC.

EPIC lives are part of a varicolored rug that is woven with all hues in intricate patterns. A crazy quilt of beauty! A vegetable garden of everything from lovely arugula to gorgeous zucchini!

An EPIC life allows for differences. It allows for you to be different from one day to the next. It allows others to be different. It allows you to love red but me to love blue. It allows me to love instrumental flute concertos and listening to Home Free but you to love blues or gospel or metal rock.

I believe that to have an EPIC life you must make conscious choices. For me that means,

  • Getting up early with a light of a passion firing me up.
  • Choosing food that I love and that loves me back.
  • Creating and sustaining healthy lifestyle choices like daily movement, fresh air and sunshine, time to relax and meditate, time to explore the infinite - God, Source, Self - whatever I conceive them to be.
  • It means giving thanks throughout the day, and particularly at the end, for the many things that happened to and for me - both the good and the not so good.
  • It means that before I go to sleep I ought to have an idea of what I want to accomplish the next day, maybe even plan my food as I tend to let my eating habits wander aimlessly.

So, all that I listed above wasn't some grand plan. So much of it bubbled to the surface while life was happening, already in me waiting to be unearthed. A lot of it was inspired by what I admired in others. Some of it books I've read, podcasts I've listened to. Songs of all things! I mean, who doesn't get just a punch of power listening to Brave by Sara Bareilles or Roar by Katy Perry or Fight Song by Rachel Platten?

What is an EPIC life?

This is such a beautiful concept that I had to create an outline for embarking on my own heroes journey using these words to act as guides. I know for my part, in the day to day mundanity of it all, things didn't feel EPIC. I mean, raising a large family and keeping home as well, as homeschooling my brood was overwhelming and mind-numbing all at once. But here and there something extraordinary happened. The beginning of a passion. I'd see a bit of sunlight or moonlight that served to inspire; a glimpse of a dream which sparked creativity

I wish now that I had learned to journal. Not in a grand literary sense like Laura Ingalls Wilder must have done but at least noted a few lines as life happened. I'd like to have known what inspired me to pursue herbs and alternative health, to make whole wheat bread from scratch, to design a yummy, healthy treat that helped to support my family by its sales, to design my dream home with pencil and paper, to learn along side my kids...

But since I didn't, I have taken some time to dig into the past by self exploration. I found a few sources for my explore and began writing it all out. Being the organizer/teacher that I am I created a workbook of sorts that I've used that has informed my current life. I am offering it to anyone who is interested in their own Heroes journey but don't know how to go about it. I mean, I don't have some ring of power to toss into Mount Doom or some similar dragon to slay. Or maybe I do, just not in the literal sense.

What is your EPIC life?

We all have one. Sometimes it's buried in mountains of daily life, like mine was. But it is there. This website is devoted to helping you to go digging for that EPIC treasure that you are. Once in while I'll offer some tools for sale that I have developed that have helped me. I could only hope for you that you find how truly extraordinary, passionate, inspired and creative you are. We need you in all your EPICness!
